You do not have to cover a potential roommate’s phone bill, travel ticket or accommodation. Even without a direct request for money, you can pause and set a boundary if the conversation pressures you to offer help. Prepared on 15 September 2026, this Ev Paylaşımı guide explains indirect money requests, practical replies and steps to take when you suspect a scam.
Can someone create a money expectation without saying “send money”?
Yes. Someone may repeatedly describe an expense and wait for you to volunteer to cover it. “My internet will be cut off, so we cannot talk anymore” can make continued contact seem dependent on your help. Being the person who offers does not mean you must keep sending money.
Discussing a shared housing budget and taking on another person’s private expenses are different decisions. Asking about monthly household costs belongs in a roommate search. Covering a new contact’s hotel in another city is not a condition of that conversation.
The FTC describes requests for travel or emergency expenses after building an online relationship as a scam pattern. That source concerns online relationships; it does not establish how often this happens on Ev Paylaşımı or the intentions of any individual member.[1]
How should I assess hints about bills, tickets or hotel costs?
A message about financial difficulty is not, by itself, proof of a scam. Consider whether it creates an expectation that you will cover a cost and whether the person respects your decision not to help. These illustrative examples show how to keep the same boundary in different situations.
| Example message | A boundary you can set |
|---|---|
| “I could not pay my phone bill; my internet will be cut off.” | “I cannot cover your bill. We can discuss the room when you are available.” |
| “I could view the room if I could afford a bus ticket.” | “I do not cover travel costs. We can arrange a viewing when your plans are ready.” |
| “I cannot afford the flight to come and see you.” | “I will not buy a ticket. Let us keep that separate from the room discussion.” |
| “I am in another city with nowhere to stay and no hotel money.” | “I cannot cover accommodation or make a financial commitment.” |
| “We could move in together if I could cover moving costs.” | “I do not cover personal moving costs. We can discuss the shared search separately.” |
| “A small loan would solve this urgent problem.” | “I cannot lend money. Please do not expect me to change that decision.” |
ℹ️About the examples
Which behaviours are warning signs of financial pressure?
Refusing to accept no, denying you time to decide and repeatedly turning a roommate conversation back to personal expenses are enough reason to pause. You do not have to prove a crime before setting a boundary or ending contact.
Consider the whole exchange instead of labelling someone because of one sign. You can decline even when a person’s difficulty is real. Do not share your account access, passwords or someone else’s private information to investigate their story.
- Messages that make you feel guilty or question your care or trust when you decline.
- Insistence on acting immediately, without time to consult someone you trust.
- A new expense following each earlier request.
- Avoiding questions about the listing or living arrangements while returning to money.
- Making continued contact or a meeting conditional on you covering costs.
- Asking you to keep the conversation secret or reacting badly when you seek advice.
How can I respond clearly to an expectation of money?
You can give a short, firm reply: “I cannot offer financial help; we can discuss the roommate arrangement.” You do not have to explain your income, prove your reasons or negotiate a smaller amount.
If your boundary is respected, you may choose to continue the housing discussion. If pressure continues, you can say “This conversation makes me uncomfortable, and I do not want to continue.” An earlier offer does not oblige you to accept new requests.
Do not argue to extract a confession. Keep the conversation records, report the user and block contact if you do not want further messages. You do not need to blame yourself. Talking with someone you trust can help you assess the situation without pressure.
Does buying the ticket or covering the bill directly remove the risk?
Covering an expense directly does not establish that the story is true or that the person intends to become your roommate. Ask whether you want to take on that cost and whether pressure is influencing your decision. Our advice is not to cover the personal expenses of a prospective roommate you have only just met.
A small amount, a promise to return it, a photo or a video call does not provide financial security. Phone verification does not verify every statement or a person’s intentions. Earlier help does not create an obligation to cover later costs.
Do not give the other person your banking password, card security details or one-time verification code after being sent a ticket or bill link. A roommate conversation need not depend on you funding someone else’s private expenses.
I sent money and now suspect a scam; what should I do?
Stop sending money and contact your bank or payment provider promptly. Explain the suspected scam and ask which options exist to stop or reverse the transaction. Recovery is not guaranteed.
The FTC also advises contacting the bank or payment provider immediately after sending money. Use the bank’s own app, website or contact details on your card, rather than a number supplied by the person you were speaking to.[2]
In Türkiye, you can ask the public prosecutor’s office, police or gendarmerie to investigate. An in-app user report does not replace an official complaint.[3]
- Keep messages, profile and listing links, the transaction date and the transaction record.
- Follow your bank’s instructions; do not send more money to recover an earlier transfer.
- Report the user on Ev Paylaşımı and block unwanted contact.
- Provide relevant records to your bank and the authorities; do not publish private conversations or account details.
How can I report these messages on Ev Paylaşımı?
Open the user menu in the conversation and choose “Report User”. Select “Fraud” if it describes your concern, then briefly explain which expense was raised and what happened when you set a boundary.
Describe the sequence instead of only writing “scammer”: “While discussing the room, the person raised travel costs; the expectation continued after I said I could not help.” This is also an illustrative report. Ev Paylaşımı assesses available information; a report does not promise an automatic finding of fraud or a particular outcome.[5]
Blocking further messages is a separate option. You can still report a user after moving to WhatsApp, but Ev Paylaşımı cannot view messages in that app. Keep the original records you may need for your bank or an official complaint.
Should I trust someone who promises to recover the money I lost?
Do not send another payment to someone who contacts you unexpectedly and asks for an upfront fee to recover your loss. Claims about opening a case or releasing funds may create a second loss.
The FTC separately describes recovery scams that target people who have already lost money. Follow the transaction through your bank’s own channels. A claim to represent a bank, platform or public body does not establish the caller’s identity.[4]
Common questions about money expectations during a roommate search
Is everyone who cannot pay a bill a scammer?
No. Financial difficulty alone is not proof of a scam. Look at repeated urgency, pressure and whether your boundaries are respected.
Must I continue helping if I offered the money first?
You do not have to accept a new request for help or expenses. You can state that you will not provide financial help and end contact if pressure continues.
Should I cover a potential roommate’s travel or hotel costs?
You are not required to cover those costs for a roommate conversation. We advise against taking on the personal expenses of someone you have only just met.
Does phone verification make a profile financially trustworthy?
Phone verification does not verify every statement, intention or aspect of financial reliability.
Will reporting the user get my money back?
A user report does not provide a refund. Contact your bank or payment provider about the transaction; platform reports are for assessing user conduct.
Can I set a boundary if there is only a hint?
Yes. You do not have to wait for an explicit money request. You can say “I cannot offer financial help; we can discuss the room.”
